How can we improve English learning to Government schools of Bihar
The condition of English in government schools of Bihar is
quite horrible. They even don’t know how to basic ABC let alone introduction
and other stuffs.
Being a teacher of English, I’d like to suggest some of the
ways -
Improving English learning in government schools in Bihar requires
a Multi-pronged approach involving curriculum reform, teacher training, student
engagement, and infrastructure development. Here’s a structured plan to enhance
English education:
1. Teacher Training & Capacity Building
- Specialized English Teacher Training:
- Conduct monthly workshops for teachers on
modern pedagogy (communicative approach, activity-based learning).
- Partner with British
Council, NCERT, or NGOs like Pratham for expert training.
- Peer Learning & Mentorship:
- Experienced English
teachers can mentor others through cluster-level meetings
- Use of Technology:
- Provide mobile apps
(e.g., Duolingo, BBC Learning English) and **online courses** (DIKSHA, SWAYAM)
for teachers.
2. Improved Curriculum & Teaching Methods
- Interactive Learning:
- Shift from rote
learning to spoken English, storytelling, debates, and role-plays
- Introduce graded
readers (simple storybooks) for different levels.
- Bilingual Approach (Initially)
- Use Hindi-to-English
transition methods to build confidence.
- Focus on Basics:
- Strengthen grammar,
vocabulary, and pronunciation through games, songs, and flashcards.
3. Better Learning Materials & Infrastructure
- Free English Textbooks & Workbooks:
- Redesign books with
more visuals, exercises, and real-life conversations
- Digital Learning:
- Install smart
classrooms with English learning software (e.g., Mindspark,
EnglishHelper).
- Use YouTube
educational channels (e.g., “VOA Learning English”).
- School Libraries with English Books:
- Provide simple
storybooks, comics (Amar Chitra Katha in English), and newspapers (The Hindu in
School).
4. Student Engagement & Practice
- English Speaking Clubs:
- Weekly debates, elocution,
and drama activities
- English Day:
- One day a week
where only English is spoken in school.
- Pen-Pal Programs:
- Connect students
with peers from other states/countries via letters or emails.
5. Government & Community Support
- Policy-Level Changes:
- Introduce spoken English
as a separate subject in the curriculum.
- Increase funding
for English labs & teacher incentives
- Community Involvement:
- Engage local
volunteers, NGOs, and retired teachers for extra classes.
- Monitoring & Feedback:
- Regular assessments
of students’ speaking & writing skills.
6. Leveraging Technology & Low-Cost Solutions
- Radio & Mobile Learning:
- AIR (All India
Radio) can broadcast English learning programs
- Free Apps & WhatsApp Groups:
- Share daily
vocabulary, quizzes, and audio lessons via WhatsApp.
Pilot Project Suggestion
- Start with 10 model schools in Bihar with smart English
labs, trained teachers, and interactive methods. Scale up based on
success.
Expected Outcomes
✔ Improved spoken & written English skills among
students.
✔ Higher student confidence in using English.
✔ Better performance in board exams and competitive
tests.
